Well, I'll be honest with you, if I hadn't personally experienced the benefits achievable by the methods I teach in the program, I'd probably be sitting on the fence right alongside you.

My Story

Hi, I'm Andrea Amador, and I've fought pretty hard over the years to keep my weight down. I eventually came to the realization that diets that were based solely on food deprivation were not the answer. They would work for a short period, but ultimately they were doomed to failure. Something was missing from the weight-loss equation.

With the help of some good teachers, it became apparent that my weight problems were entwined with past emotional issues. And until I dealt with those buggin' me's I would never get my weight and my life back to where I wanted.

I really hit the jackpot when my journey of self-discovery led me to an incredibly effective technique for personal change known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). This deceptively simple but powerful method allowed me to gain control over my cravings and sever the link between food and emotions.

I also became aware of a process called Intuitive Eating. This is a method used by therapists to heal people who are afflicted with eating disorders. It works by making the sufferer more consciously aware of their body and putting the control back in their hands. Simply put, it's eating in response to your body's hunger signals.  

Today, thanks largely to these two techniques, I am on the road to controlling my weight and my life.

I am utterly convinced of the potential of these methods to enrich the lives of countless women, and I have made it my business to share that knowledge with as many as possible. And that's where Say Goodbye to Dieting comes in.

Foods that I thought I liked, I don't like. I really don't! When I actually focused on their taste, and smell and focused on what I was eating, it was amazing. Like certain types of pizza, I thought I liked stuff on it and I don't, it's just amazing that foods that I would have eaten before and not thought anything about it, I don't like them anymore. I'm getting to the point where I won't eat anything I don't want. Now I know that if I make a sandwich, I sometimes don't like the texture of the bread or the tomato is too soggy or the miracle whip is too sweet and I just won't eat it if I don't love it.

Wait a minute, how can eating forbidden food lead to my ideal body?

When you allow yourself to eat what you want, when you want, you begin to want different types of food, and you can be fully satisfied by smaller portions. This is a radical departure from the deprivation model used by standard diets but it really works.

When we reject the diet mentality and (re)learn what our body really needs, we can trust ourselves to eat foods that the diet police consider to be forbidden.

Several of the Say Goodbye to Dieting sessions are devoted to retraining the body to recognize its true level of hunger and, most important, discovering when it is satisfied. It seems incredible that as adults we need to learn what a newborn baby intuitively understands, but, sadly, many of us were steered in the wrong direction as we were growing up. This guidance eventually overrode our natural instincts and left us in a confused dietary mess.

Foods that I thought I like, I just don't. I've been becoming more acutely aware of what I was hungry for, not just hungry for food, a particular food, but I would ask myself, "Is this what I want? Do I want Cinnamon Toast or Raisin Bran for breakfast? And the raisin bran won out so I became really discerning about what I wanted and I'm leaving a lot of food on my plate now. It feels really comfortable and I feel good doing that."

Dealing with the root causes of weight problems

I like to visualize our poor eating habits as being driven by a group of imaginary characters who chatter away in negative, unhelpful inner voices whenever we have to make food choices. As a group, I term them the screaming meanies, and here are some of the things they come up with:

  • You fat pig, are you eating AGAIN?
  • Well, after that lunch, you'd better forget about having any dinner.
  • Don't you dare eat that! Do you KNOW how many calories are in there?
  • Come on, clean up that plate. Be a good girl.
  • You really blew it! How're gonna work that off?

Do any of those sound familiar? In the long run, these destructive, judgmental voices don't help us, in fact, they do the opposite. They make us feel guilty and worthless, and all the more likely to turn to comfort food. Talk about a vicious circle!

As parents, we know that speaking to our children in this way is not only ineffective, but it is harmful to their happiness and ongoing development. Despite this, we still allow these inner voices to hammer away at our own psyches; sabotaging our weight-reduction plans and making our lives miserable. Clearly, we need to bring in a new management team.

And that's what Say Goodbye to Dieting is all about. One of its overall themes is to develop an awareness of the misleading messages that your own particular meanies or negative self talk come up with, and then reframe them into more truthful and beneficial statements.
